The Greensboro Monarchs were an American ice hockey franchise based in Greensboro , North Carolina . The venue for the monarchs was the Greensboro Coliseum .

history

The franchise was founded in 1989 and began playing in the East Coast Hockey League . Head coach was Jeff Brubaker , who was active in his career in the NHL. The Monarchs reached the playoffs in their first season and also won the Riley Cup in the finals against the Winston-Salem Thunderbirds . Wade Flaherty , who later played in the NHL, was the first Monarchs player to be voted MVP . In the years that followed, the team wasn't quite as successful. Although the Monarchs usually achieved significantly more victories in the regular season, they did not succeed in winning the Riley Cup in the play-offs. The team achieved their best record in the 1991/92 season, in which they were eliminated in the play-offs in the third round, but had played a convincing regular season with 43 wins and only 17 defeats. In the 1994/95 season, the Greensboro Monarchs reached the final of the play-offs again, but failed against the Richmond Renegades . The franchise was subsequently dissolved.
