The Mississippi Sea Wolves were an American ice hockey team from Biloxi , Mississippi . The team played in the ECHL from 1996 to 2005 and from 2007 to 2009 .

history

The Mississippi Sea Wolves were founded in 1996 as a franchise of the East Coast Hockey League . Their most successful season graduated from the team when they are in season 1998/99 after a second place in the Southwest Division in the playoffs first a bye had before it through victories over the South Carolina Stingrays , Florida Everblades and Pee Dee Pride to the finals the Kelly Cup moved in by winning just 4: 3 in the best-of-seven series against the Richmond Renegades . In the series, Richmond had already won 3-1 and in Game 7 the decision was only made in overtime . In the years that followed, the team was unable to build on this success. Only the 2001/02 season, in which the later Kelly Cup winner Greenville Grrrowl was only defeated in the fourth playoff round, was similarly successful.

The Hurricane Katrina caused severe damage in August 2005 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum , the venue of the Sea Wolves, which then had two years inactive. Among other things, offices, changing rooms and extensive ice hockey equipment including the two Zambonis were destroyed. After extensive renovation work, it was possible to start playing for the 2007/08 season. After the withdrawal from the ECHL had already been announced in March 2009, the Sea Wolves management announced in spring 2009 that with the Mississippi Surge from the Southern Professional Hockey League a new franchise would be established in Biloxi and the tradition of the Sea Wolves would be continued.
