Career

Radek Smoleňák began his career as a ice hockey player in the youth of the Czech first division club HC Kladno , for which he was active until 2004. He then moved to the Kingston Frontenacs in the Canadian top junior league Ontario Hockey League , for which he was on the ice from 2004 to 2006. During this period, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2005 in the third round as a total of 73rd player by the Tampa Bay Lightning .

For their farm teams , the Johnstown Chiefs from the ECHL and the Springfield Falcons from the American Hockey League , he played in the 2006/07 season . After the winger in the 2007/08 season, both for the Norfolk Admirals in the AHL and Mississippi Sea Wolves had accrued in the ECHL, he made his debut in the in the following season National Hockey League for Tampa, where the Czech in his rookie year in six games were presented. The 2009/10 season started turbulent for the Czech. After he had spent the pre-season in Tampa, they put him on September 25 in the AHL squad. First he had to be on the waiver list for 24 hours , from where the Chicago Blackhawks selected him. They took him to Europe for the NHL opener and used him both in preparation and at the season opener. On October 10th - two weeks after the change - the Blackhawks then also tried to send the striker into the AHL squad. From there, the Tampa Bay Lightning Smoleňák brought back and used him again with the Norfolk Admirals.

In the 2010/11 season Smoleňák played mostly for HC Sparta Prague in the extra league . For the final phase of the season and the relegation he was loaned by Sparta to his ex-club HC Kladno. For the following season he joined Ässät Pori from the Finnish SM-liiga , but was given to the Pelicans Lahti in January 2012 . In December 2012, his current contract was extended until the end of the 2014/15 season, while Smoleňák was loaned to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod until the end of the season. After only seven games for Torpedo in the KHL , his loan contract was transferred to the Timrå IK from the Elitserien .

After the end of the season he returned to the Pelicans and was one of the best scorers in the SM-liiga at the beginning of the 2013/14 season. In November 2013, he made use of a KHL release clause in his contract and moved to HK Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk .

From June 2015 Smoleňák was under contract with the KHL Medveščak Zagreb in the Continental Hockey League and played 59 KHL games for the club. He then moved to HC Slovan Bratislava . There he played until December 2017 before he was loaned to Mountfield HK from the Czech extra league . For the following season he received a permanent contract there, but moved in October 2018 - for a month - to the National League promoted SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers . He then returned to Mountfield HK.
