NHL Entry Draft
|
The 2005 NHL Entry Draft took place on July 30, 2005 at The Westinn Ottawa in Ottawa , Canada . The 30 NHL teams had the chance to secure the rights to the most hopeful talents. Each team was allowed to select one player per round, unless the team had given up the right to vote in a transfer.
initial situation
The 2004/05 season was canceled due to the lockout . The actual date for the draft was June 25th , but as the NHL and the players had not yet agreed, the draft was canceled on that date. On July 30th, the draft did not take place in a large hall filled with spectators, as is usually the case, but on a small scale in a hotel in Ottawa. The multifunctional arena in Ottawa, rented for June 25, would have been available for the second time, but the event could not have been organized on such a short scale.
Since the final table of the NHL and the performance of the teams qualified for the play-offs is normally the basis of the draft order, the order had to be decided this time via a special lottery. In a pot there were a total of 48 balls with the names of the teams, whereby there were four teams with three balls, ten teams with two balls and the remaining teams with one ball each. The rule was that each team had three balls at the beginning. Then one ball was deducted for every play-off participation in the last three years and one ball for every first draft pick (1st overall draft pick). At least one ball per team had to remain. Teams that hadn't been successful in recent years had better chances of getting a high draft position.
3 balls
2 bullets
- Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , Atlanta Thrashers , Calgary Flames , Carolina Hurricanes , Chicago Blackhawks , Edmonton Oilers , Los Angeles Kings , Minnesota Wild , Nashville Predators , Phoenix Coyotes
A ball
- Boston Bruins , Colorado Avalanche , Dallas Stars , Detroit Red Wings , Florida Panthers , Montréal Canadiens , New Jersey Devils , New York Islanders , Ottawa Senators , Philadelphia Flyers , San Jose Sharks , St. Louis Blues , Tampa Bay Lightning , Toronto Maple Leafs , Vancouver Canucks , Washington Capitals
The lottery winners were the Pittsburgh Penguins, who were drawn first. While after a normal season the second round of the draft continues in such a way that the order of the first round is retained, this time the second round began in reverse order. So the Pittsburgh Penguins were allowed to choose the first player, but then it wasn't their turn until player number 60 and thus the last of the second round was selected.
Draft result
In the rankings of the NHL scouts Sidney Crosby was led to number one in North America , who was then selected as the first player in the draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The first player not from North America was Anže Kopitar from Slovenia, who was in first place in the European ranking and was drafted in 11th place by the Los Angeles Kings. The only German was Philip Gogulla , who was drafted in the second round in 48th position by the Buffalo Sabers.
