The Charlottetown Islanders are a professional Canadian junior ice hockey team based in Charlottetown , Prince Edward Island , playing in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . The franchise plays its home games in the Charlottetown Civic Center .
history
The team was formed in 1999 in Montreal , Québec , where it played as the Montréal Rocket in the LHJMQ. In 2003, the team moved from Montreal to Charlottetown, where the team was on the ice under the name PEI Rocket until the end of the 2012/13 season . The team was named after Maurice Richard , a former Montréal Canadiens player who was known by the nickname "The Rocket" ( The Rocket ). His famous shirt number 9 is also included in the Rocket's team logo. One of the NHL players who played for the Rocket in their junior years is Maxim Lapierre , and the franchise's biggest success in the LHJMQ was reaching the Conference quarterfinals in 2004.
Before the start of the 2013-14 season , the team was sold to a new owner and renamed the Charlottetown Islanders.
