The Castors de Sherbrooke ( English : Sherbrooke Beavers ) were a Canadian ice hockey team from Sherbrooke , Québec . The team played from 1969 to 1982 and from 1992 to 2003 in one of Canada's top three junior ice hockey leagues, the Québec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

history

The Castors de Sherbrooke were founded in 1969 as a franchise of the QMJHL of which they were a founding member. The team had their most successful period when they won the Coupe du Président three times in the mid-1970s and early 1980s (1974/75, 1976/77 and 1981/82). As champions of the QMJHL they qualified for the final tournament for the Memorial Cup , in which they were closest to the championship of the Canadian Hockey League with the 4-7 final defeat in 1982 against the Kitchener Rangers from the Ontario Hockey League . Despite the success, the team was relocated to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu , Québec , following the 1981/82 season , where they then took part in the QMJHL game operations under the name Castors de Saint-Jean .

In 1976, Castors de Sherbrooke represented Canada at the third unofficial junior ice hockey world championship .

In the summer of 1992, the Draveurs de Trois-Rivières were relocated from Trois-Rivières , Québec, to Sherbrooke and renamed the Faucons de Sherbrooke, thus following the tradition of the Castors de Sherbrooke, whose name the team officially bore again from 1998. However, this could not follow on from the success of the original Castors, so that the franchise was relocated to Lewiston , Maine , USA in 2003 , where it played in the QMJHL until 2011 under the name Lewiston MAINEiacs .
