John David Chabot (born May 18, 1962 in Summerside , Prince Edward Island ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach who was active in the National Hockey League and German Ice Hockey League .
Player career
Chabot was selected by the Canadiens de Montréal in the second round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft in round two as the 40th player. In 1984/85 he moved from the Habs to the Pittsburgh Penguins , where he played in a row with Mario Lemieux . He spent the 1987/88 to 1990/91 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings .
In 1991 Chabot decided to move to Europe and was signed by HC Milano Saima , for whom he played in the Alpine League . At the beginning of the following season he was active for HC Devils Milano , before he moved to Germany to the Prussians Berlin during the 1992/93 season. With the Prussians he played until the 96/97 season. In 1997 he played the Swiss playoff final with EV Zug , after which he was drawn to the Frankfurt Lions . After three years in Frankfurt he went to the Eisbären Berlin, where he ended his active career after a season in the summer of 2001. Chabot also played eleven games for Team Canada .
Coaching career
In 2001 he became the head coach of the Hull Olympiques in the Canadian Junior League QMJHL . In 2002 he changed to the post of assistant coach and was part of the team until 2005, which has since been renamed Gatineau Olympiques . In February 2006, the Acadie-Bathurst Titan signed him from the QMJHL, which he was able to lead to the semi-finals of the playoffs in the same year .
From July 2007 to the end of the 2008/09 season he was assistant coach with Gerard Gallant and Daniel Lacroix at the New York Islanders in the NHL.
social commitment
Chabot founded an organization called the "First Assist Initiative," which provides sports for Native Americans. Chabot himself is a member of the Algonquin tribe living in the Kitigan Zibi reserve (province of Québec ) .
