The Olympiques de Gatineau ( English Gatineau Olympiques ) are a Canadian ice hockey team of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) based in Gatineau . The team has existed since 1973, then as the Hull Festivals , later as the Hull Olympiques, and plays its home games in the Robert Guertin Arena .

history

The team was founded in the 1960s under the name Castors de Hull as a member of the Central Junior A Hockey League . The name was later changed to Hawks de Hull . After the club was relegated to the second level of the Central Junior A Hockey League, she managed to get the license for a franchise in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec on April 24, 1973 . The name was changed to Festivals de Hull as early as 1970 . On the occasion of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal , the club was named Olympiques de Hull . In 2002 the Canadian city of Hull was incorporated into Gatineau and the Hull Olympiques became the Gatineau Olympiques .

Since the mid-1980s, the Olympiques have been one of the LHJMQ's most successful franchises. They were able to win the LHJMQ championship, the Coupe du Président , a total of seven times . This was last achieved in 2008. The greatest success of the Olympiques was victory in the Memorial Cup , the championship of the Canadian Hockey League , in the 1996/97 season.
