Career
The native Styrian Gregor Baumgartner, who comes from the youth of the Kapfenberg sports association , left his parents' house at the age of 15 to try his luck in North America. After a few years in Canadian junior ice hockey , he was in the International Hockey League for the first time as a professional in 1999 , where he stormed for the Michigan K-Wings . His further career path took him via Oklahoma and Idaho to Utah. From 2001 to 2003 Baumgartner was able to gain a foothold in the American Hockey League and the East Coast Hockey League . In 2002 he was the first Austrian in history to be called up for the AHL All-Star Classic .
Nevertheless, he was drawn back home from the Pensacola Ice Pilots in 2003, where he stormed the Austrian Bundesliga for the first time in his career with the Vienna Capitals . After a brief stint in Salzburg in the 2004/05 season , he returned to Vienna after a few months , where he quickly became an important part of the team that brought the 2005 championship to the capital. For the 2006/07 season Baumgartner moved to the Black Wings Linz , where he is currently under contract. With the Linzers he won the championship title in 2012 and, as the top scorer in the playoffs, contributed significantly to winning the title.
In November 2014 he was removed from the Black Wings squad despite an ongoing contract.
International
In 1996, Baumgartner took part in the U18-C European Championship and the U20-B World Championship in the junior division. He made his debut in the men's national team on April 25, 2000 in the 1: 4 defeat against Belarus in Minsk . In the same year he also took part in the A-World Championship for his home country for the first time . Also in 2007 , 2009 and 2013 he played with the Austrian selection in the top division of the world championships. In 2012, however , he had to compete in Division I with the Alpine nationals, but with the team he was promoted to the top division again. He also represented his colors at the qualifying tournament for the 2014 Winter Olympics , in which the Austrians were able to qualify for the Winter Games for the first time since 2002.
