List of the mayors of Lennep 1413–1806

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mayor Engelbert ter Laen 1550/55
Jakob Tuckermann, 1550 mayor?

This is the list of the mayors of Lennep for the years 1413 to 1806.

Along with Düsseldorf , Ratingen and Wipperfürth, Lennep was one of the so-called “capitals” in the former Duchy of Berg . These four cities were entitled to send two members each to the Bergisches Landtag in Düsseldorf. These eight people formed the city curia (in addition to the curia of the knighthood ) of the Bergisches Landtag, which held important rights until the end of the Ancien Régime around 1806, e. B. that of the tax permit could claim. A veto by the city curia could block any state parliament resolution. The respective mayor was almost always one of the two city deputies. He came entirely from one of the few councilors families of the four Bergish capitals that had been leading for generations and formed the economic and - besides the nobility - the political leading class in the Duchy of Berg in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The term of office of the Lennep mayor was one year each until 1806, after which he was chairman of the municipal lay judge for a year . The city council included the mayor, ten council members (as "councilors" also members of the city court) and the city judge, and in the 16th century also four "judges" from outside citizenship .

While the lists for Düsseldorf and Ratingen for the 16th to 18th centuries are largely complete, the list of the mayors of Wipperfürth and Lennep still has large gaps due to the very poor sources, which need to be supplemented by further research.
