List of Mayors of Ratingen 1320–1806

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is the list of the mayors of Ratingen for the years 1320–1806.

Along with Lennep , Düsseldorf and Wipperfürth, Ratingen was one of the so-called “capitals” in the former Duchy of Berg . These four cities were entitled to send two members each to the Bergisches Landtag in Düsseldorf. These eight people formed the city curia (in addition to the curia of the knighthood ) of the Bergisches Landtag, which held important rights until the end of the Ancien Régime around 1806, e. B. that of the tax permit could claim. A veto by the city curia could block any state parliament resolution. The respective mayor was almost always one of the two city deputies. He came consistently from one of the few councilor families of the four Bergish capitals that had been leading for generations and formed the economically and - alongside the nobility - politically leading class in the Duchy of Berg in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The Mayor of Ratingen was re-elected for one year every year on the Thursday after Whitsun. He was chairman of the city council, which originally comprised 8 council members in addition to him, but was expanded to 24 councilors, the magistrates and 4 "journeymen" in 1567/70. Mayors and journeymen formed the executive council. The mayor of Ratingen was also chairman of the "mayor's court", which only had arbitration powers. He could be re-elected at the end of his one-year term.

Because of the poor sources, the list for the 14th, 15th and early 16th centuries is still very sketchy.
