List of mayors of Wipperfürth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list is made by the mayors of Wipperfürth .

list

Wipperfürth was one of the four so-called "capitals" in the former Duchy of Berg . The cities of Lennep , Düsseldorf , Ratingen and Wipperfürth were each entitled to send two members to the Bergisch Landtag in Düsseldorf. These eight people formed the city curia (in addition to the curia of the knighthood ) of the Bergisches Landtag, which was able to assert important rights, for example that of tax approval, until the end of the Ancien Régime around 1806. A veto by the city curia could block any state parliament resolution. The respective mayor was almost always one of the two city deputies. He always came from one of the few councilor families of the four Bergish capitals that had been leading for generations and formed the economic and - besides the nobility - the political leading class in the Duchy of Berg in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Until 1806 the mayor was re-elected on January 21st. Before 1806, his term of office was one year, after which the former mayor of Wipperfürth was chairman of the municipal jury for a year . While the list of mayors for Düsseldorf and Ratingen for the 16th to 18th centuries is largely complete, the list for Wipperfürth and Lennep still has large gaps due to the very poor source of sources, which must be supplemented by further research.
