Jerzy Turowicz (born December 10, 1912 in Krakow ; † January 27, 1999 ibid) was a Polish journalist, founder and 1945–1953 and 1956–1999 chief editor of the Catholic weekly " Tygodnik Powszechny ". He held the post of editor for a total of 51 years.

During the Second World War he was active in the Catholic resistance movement "Unia".

Under his leadership, "Tygodnik Powszechny" became the voice of the cosmopolitan Polish Catholics. In Stalin's time, the editorial staff was harassed by censors. After Stalin's death in March 1953, Turowicz refused to publish an obituary. As a result, the weekly was closed by the authorities. The editorship was handed over to the Catholics loyal to the regime by the "PAX" group. Only as a result of the “ Polish October ” 1956 was the weekly returned to the legal editors.

In 1964 Turowicz signed the "Letter of Protest of the 34" against the increasing limitation of freedom of speech.

In the 1980s, the weekly run by Turowicz was regarded as the press organ for opposition circles.

He was an avid supporter of the Second Vatican Council . He promoted the circles that welcomed the modernization of the Catholic Church. He wrote a book "The Church Is Not a Submarine". In 1999 the Znak publishing house published a collection of his feature articles “Ticket to Paradise”.

Due to his uncompromising attitude, he often had arguments with the official church. He was hated by the national conservative circles and venerated as an old master by the Catholic intellectuals. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Jagiellonian University .
