The Tygodnik Powszechny ( General weekly ) is a since March 24, 1945 published Catholic Polish newspaper.

The newspaper, which, according to its subtitle, sees itself as a Catholic socio-cultural paper, is published in Krakow . Alongside Tygodnik Warszawski, who was later banned, it was intended from the start as an attempt to defend against the dominance of the communist media in the People's Republic of Poland . In 1953 it was banned by the rulers because it refused to print a necrology on Josef Stalin . The ban was lifted with the change of power in 1956 by party leader Władysław Gomułka . As a forum for Catholic intellectuals, the Tygodnik was closely associated with the Znak group , which for years had non-communist members of parliament in the Polish Sejm , and later with the opposition movement KOR and Solidarność, founded in 1976 . After the declaration of war in December 1981, the publication of the newspaper was stopped for a few months. Since the 1990s, conflicts with the Catholic hierarchy in Poland have increased because of positions that are allegedly too liberal. The claim to intellectual leadership that Tygodnik Powszechny embodied under the aegis of the charismatic editor-in-chief Jerzy Turowicz , who headed the paper for 50 years until 1999, manifested itself in a number of prominent employees such as Stefan Kisielewski , Stanisław Stomma , Józef Tischner and the archbishop from Krakow, Karol Wojtyła . From 1999 to 2011 the liberal religious Adam Boniecki was editor-in-chief of the newspaper. For his services to German-Polish reconciliation, Tygodnik Powszechny was awarded the DIALOG Prize of the Federal Association of German-Polish Societies in October 2005 .

Ownership

In 2008 the ITI media group took a stake in the newspaper and until 2011 held a slight majority of 53% of the shares. The ITI board contractually guaranteed the newspaper editorial independence. ITI withdrew in 2011, and since then the Tygodnik Powszechny Foundation ( Fundacja Tygodnika Powszechnego ) has been the owner and publisher .
