Cobourg [ ˈkoʊ̯bəɹg ] is a Canadian city on Lake Ontario in Northumberland County . It is located 75 kilometers east of Toronto in the province of Ontario and had a population of around 18,500 in 2009.
history
The city was founded as Amherst in 1798 . In 1819 it was renamed Cobourg in memory of the wedding of Crown Princess Charlotte of England to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg . In 1868, Cobourg was the birthplace of actress Marie Dressler .
Town twinning
Cobourg entered into a town partnership with the town of Coburg in Bavaria in 1997 , after the German town had made initial proposals in 1972.
In addition, Cobourg maintains a town partnership with the Albanian capital Tirana .
