The Piwnica pod Baranami ( Cellar to the Aries ) is a cabaret on the main market in Krakow . The theater was built in the former aristocratic palace of the same name as part of the liberalization policy under Władysław Gomułka in 1956. The founder was a group of students at the Cracow Art Academy. In the following 40 years, under the aegis of the impresario Piotr Skrzynecki, a large number of small pieces and songs were performed and cabaret evenings were organized that continued the great tradition of Krakow cabaret from the turn of the century. Up until Skrzynecki's death in 1997, the most famous Polish musicians and actors performed here, and many important careers began there. These included the jazz musicians Krzysztof Komeda and Andrzej Kurylewicz , the chanson singers Ewa Demarczyk , Marek Grechuta and Grzegorz Turnau . Zbigniew Preisner , who later became famous for his film music for Krzysztof Kieślowski , is one of the house's composers .
