Andrzej Kurylewicz

Andrzej Roman Kurylewicz (born October 24, 1932 in Lviv , † April 13, 2007 in Konstancin-Jeziorna ) was a Polish jazz musician (piano, trombone), band leader and composer. He was one of the pioneers of Polish jazz.

Kurylewicz received instrumental lessons from the age of six. As a result of the Second World War, he and his family were relocated to Gliwice . In 1950 he began studying at the State Music Academy in Cracow with pianist Henryk Sztompka and composer Stanisław Wiechowicz . In 1954 Kurylewicz, who, like Krzysztof Komeda and Andrzej Trzaskowski, was a member of the jazz band Melomani led by Jerzy Matuszkiewicz , was de-registered when jazz was temporarily banned in Poland in the wake of Stalinism . He initially focused on writing chansons and worked with Wanda Warska , who later became his wife. He directed a jazz sextet for Radio Kraków until 1962. Between 1964 and 1966 he was director of the Polish radio and television orchestra in Warsaw, with which he also went on international concert tours. 1969 founded the avant-garde ensemble Formacja Muzyki Wspolczesnej , which performed Third Stream and New Music until 1978 . In 1972 he performed with Wanda Warska and bassist Jacek Bednarek in West Germany.

Since 1958 he wrote the music for films and television productions such as Powrót , Lalka and Polskie drogi , for which he received numerous prizes, about 1981 the Prix ​​Italia ; from 1980 he also wrote classical music, such as a string quartet. In his last years he also interpreted the works of Karol Szymanowski and Fryderyk Chopin as a pianist .

In April 2001 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class , for his services to the German-Polish cultural exchange . In 2007 he was posthumously honored with the Order of Polonia Restituta .

The philosopher Gabriela Kurylewicz is his daughter.

Polskie Drogi

Kurylewicz's best-known work is his theme song for the TV series Polskie Drogi ( Polish Ways ), which premiered in 1976. She became internationally known in 2002 through the CD Upojenie ( Rausch ) by Polish singer Anna Maria Jopek , on which she is played by American jazz guitarist Pat Metheny - as a reference to his Polish colleague.
