Wanda Warska
Wanda Warska (born April 28, 1932 in Poznań ; † July 6, 2019 in Laski ) was a Polish jazz and chanson singer.
Life
Warska studied in her hometown and in Krakow. Since 1956 she has worked with the jazz pianist and composer Andrzej Kurylewicz , whose songs she also interprets. In 1959 she drew attention to herself in Andrzej Trzaskowski's music for Jerzy Kawalerowicz's film Nachtzug ; In 1962 her vocalises could be heard in Krzysztof Komeda's ballet Etudes . In the film Die Endlose Nacht (1963) she sang the Peter Thomas composition Come, put your arm around me , accompanied by the Andrzej Trzaskowskí quintet in a scat version. During the 1960s she toured Europe several times and was considered one of the best European jazz singers; she also lived for a while in the United States, where she also performed. In 1967 she founded the independent studio Piwnica Artystyczna Kurylewiczów with Kurylewicz in the old town of Warsaw , where readings, concerts and exhibitions were held. In 1970 she gave a concert at the Jazz Jamboree . In the early 1970s she performed with Kurylewicz and the bassist Jacek Bednarek in West Germany in jazz clubs and at festivals such as “Jazz auf der Burg” in Dreieich , and in 1972 she was also involved in the opening ceremony of the new Darmstadt State Theater . She set poems by Heinrich Heine as well as by Jan Kochanowski to music . She also wrote film music and began to paint.
With her husband Andrzej Kurylewicz she had a daughter, the philosopher Gabriela Kurylewicz.
Awards and honors
- In 2000 Warska was honored with the officer level of the Polish Order of Merit Polonia Restituta .
- In April 2001 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class , for her services to the German-Polish cultural exchange .
