Piotr Skrzynecki (born September 12, 1930 in Warsaw , † April 27, 1997 in Krakow ) was a Polish cabaret artist and founder of the legendary Krakow cabaret cellar Piwnica pod Baranami .

Skrzynecki was born in Warsaw as the son of a Polish Jew and lieutenant colonel Marian Skrzynecki. His father fought against the Wehrmacht at the beginning of the Second World War , then fell on the Polish Eastern Front fighting the Red Army . Piotr survived the war with his mother in Warsaw, both came to Łódź after the war , where he studied theater education. In the early 1950s he was sent to Krakow for an internship, where he worked with amateur theater groups in Nowa Huta, among others . He stayed in Krakow and began studying art history . However, he did not finish this course. In 1956 he founded Cabaret Piwnica pod baranami with other Krakow students . He led the small cellar theater as artistic director until his death. It quickly achieved cult status. The charismatic Skrzynecki gathered numerous outstanding young artists who began in his basement and then achieved national fame. The chanson singer Ewa Demarczyk began her career with him, as did the composer Zbigniew Preisner and later the songwriter Grzegorz Turnau . In the 40 years of his work at Piwnica pod baranami, Piotr Skrzynecki developed into a leading and cult figure in Krakow life. Most of his life he was a homeless man , who lived as a lodger with his girlfriend, Janina Garycka, and devoted his life to cabaret, with no interest in material things. Piotr Skrzynecki is an honorary citizen of Krakow.
