Krystyna Zachwatowicz (born May 16, 1930 in Warsaw ) is a Polish stage designer and actress . She is the wife of the director Andrzej Wajda and the daughter of the architects Jan Zachwatowicz and Maria Zachwatowicz .

Krystyna Zachwatowicz first studied art history at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow . She completed this course in 1952. She then went on to study stage design at the Cracow School of Art , which she graduated in 1958. In the same year she made her theatrical debut as a set designer in Sosnowiec . Since the 1960s she has worked for the most important theaters in Krakow and Poland, such as the Polish Theater in Warsaw and the Polish Theater in Wroclaw . Since the 1970s she has worked almost exclusively for productions by her husband Andrzej Wajda. In 1958 she began her acting career on the cabaret stage Piwnica pod baranami in Krakow. Her first film appearance was in Andrzej Wajdas Samson in 1961 . In 1976 she returned to The Marble Man on the Set as an actress. In 1979 she played one of the main roles in Wilko's Girls, also directed by Andrzej Wajda . Since then she has regularly played minor roles in Wajda's films. She also designed the costumes for Wajda's films Die Hochzeit , Eine Liebe in Deutschland and Die Rache . She is a member of the Polish Film Academy and a professor at the Cracow School of Art. In 1999 she was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta .
