Steven Andrew "Steve" Oleksy (born February 4, 1986 in Chesterfield , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with EHC Linz from the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League (EBEL) since February 2020, where he holds the position of defender plays.
Career
Oleksy played in his youth between 2002 and 2005 first with the Michigan Metro Jets in the Central States Hockey League . With the beginning of the 2005/06 season, the defender stayed a game year with the Traverse City North Stars in the North American Hockey League before he decided to study at Lake Superior State University . There he played for the next three years until the spring of 2009 while studying in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .
After graduating, Oleksy considered a career in the professional field and joined the Las Vegas Wranglers from the ECHL for the remainder of the 2008-09 season , for which he played two games. Over the summer break he moved to league rivals Toledo Walleye after he could not recommend himself in the training camp of the Rockford IceHogs from the American Hockey League . The brief stint in Toledo ended after two months and three completed games in early November 2009. The defender then moved to the Port Huron Icehawks in the International Hockey League before returning to the ECHL during the season. There he was active for the Idaho Steelheads from mid-January 2010 . With his achievements in the rest of the season, he worked out an extension of his contract for the following season, in which he was so staged with 21 scorer points in 55 missions that in March 2011 a loan deal with the Lake Erie Monsters from the AHL came about. The same happened in the 2011/12 season , when he - still in the service of the Steelheads - was awarded to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers from the AHL, before they committed him in February 2012 after the end of the three-month loan business until the end of the season.
As a free agent , Oleksy joined the Hershey Bears in July 2012 within the AHL . With his appearances in the jersey of the Bears, the defensive player also aroused the interest of the cooperation partner Hersheys, the Washington Capitals from the National Hockey League . There he signed a contract valid for the NHL during the 2012/13 season and soon made his debut in the jersey of the capital city club. The American then spent the 2013/14 season between the NHL and NHL, where he was used almost equally for the Capitals and Bears. The 2014/15 season , with the exception of one NHL game, he was exclusively for the Hershey Bears, where he now played the role of assistant captain. Nevertheless, his expiring contract was not extended at the end of the season, whereupon he - again as a free agent - switched to the Pittsburgh Penguins franchise . There he was used in the 2015/16 season in the AHL farm team Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , where he also served as assistant captain. After being on the farm team again at the beginning of the 2016/17 season , he was appointed to the Pittsburgh NHL squad for the first time at the end of November 2016.
At the trade deadline on March 1, 2017, Oleksy was handed over to the Toronto Maple Leafs , along with Eric Fehr and a four-round vote for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft , who in return sent Frank Corrado to Pittsburgh. In Toronto, Oleksy finished the season before joining the Anaheim Ducks as a free agent in July 2017 . They used him with the San Diego Gulls until December 2018 and then transferred him back to Toronto in exchange for Adam Cracknell . The defender ended the season in the Canadian metropolis, but received no follow-up contract as a result. It wasn't until the end of September 2019 that he received a trial contract from his ex-team Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins, which was terminated in mid-October without having played in the AHL. The American then joined the Toledo Walleye from the ECHL, for which he had already played a few games at the beginning of his professional career ten years earlier.
After 36 appearances for Toledo, Oleksy moved to Europe for the first time in his career in February 2020 when he moved to the Austrian club EHC Linz from the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League (EBEL).
