The 1.93 m tall winger began his career with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League before being selected 18th in the first round by the Washington Capitals in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft . In the Wheat Kings jersey, Fehr played 339 games between 2000 and 2005. In his last year in the league, he won the Bob Clarke Trophy as top scorer and the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as best player of the season. He then switched to the organization of the Capitals.
First, the left shooter was used by the Hershey Bears , a Washington farm team , in the American Hockey League (AHL). However, during the 2005/06 season he also played his first eleven games in the National Hockey League . With the Bears, Fehr won the Calder Cup , the championship of the American Hockey League, in his first professional season away from junior hockey. At the beginning of the following season , the Canadian was reassigned to the squad of the Capitals, but then returned to the Hershey Bears. On his second appointment in January 2007, the attacker finally scored his first NHL goal in his franchise's 7-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes .
From February 4, 2008, Eric Fehr was back on the Washington Capitals NHL squad after returning to the Hershey Bears at the beginning of the 2007/08 season . This transferred the right winger on July 8, 2011 in exchange for Danick Paquette and a four-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft to the Winnipeg Jets . His best season to date was in the 2009/10 season , when he had 39 points scorer in 69 games. Due to the NHL lockout , Fehr moved from October 2012 to January 2013 to the HPK Hämeenlinna in the Finnish SM-liiga , where he scored 25 scorer points in 21 games. After the lockout ended, he returned to the Washington Capitals and signed a one-year contract there. Almost four months later, he prematurely extended this contract for two years.
In July 2015 Fehr was unable to agree on a new contract with the Capitals, so he joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent and signed a three-year contract there. In his first year he won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins . At the trade deadline on March 1, 2017, Fehr and Steven Oleksy as well as a four-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2017 were given to the Toronto Maple Leafs , who in return sent Frank Corrado to Pittsburgh. In November 2017, the Maple Leafs awarded the attacker to the San Diego Gulls from the AHL. This engagement ended when he was given to the San Jose Sharks in February 2018 in exchange for a seven-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft . In San Jose, Fehr ended the 2017/18 season, but did not receive a continuing contract, so he joined the Minnesota Wild again as a free agent .
After a season in Minnesota, the striker decided to move to Europe again, where he signed a contract with Genève-Servette HC from the Swiss National League in July 2019 .
International
Fehr played with Team Canada Western - a selection of players from the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan - in the 2001 World U-17 Hockey Challenge . He ran in five games, prepared a goal and received 20 penalty minutes.
