Tommy Wingels (born April 12, 1988 in Evanston , Illinois ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with Genève-Servette HC from the Swiss National League since August 2018 and plays for them in the position of the center .

Career

Wingels began his junior career in 2006 with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the United States Hockey League . There he played a solid first season as an 18-year-old with 28 points in 47 games. For the following season, the American moved to college and began his studies at Miami University in Oxford , Ohio . At the same time he played at the university for the university team Miami RedHawks , who were based in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his very first season at college, Wingels recorded 29 points in 42 games. He followed similar numbers in the second year after he was selected in the sixth round in the summer of 2008 in 177th place by the San Jose Sharks in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft . Meanwhile, the team made it to the finals of the NCAA Division I championship for the first time ever, where Boston University was defeated by just 3: 4 in overtime . In his third and final year at Miami University, Wingels finally led the team as team captain on ice and was part of a quartet of four players who scored over 40 scorer points. At the end of the season, the team won the championship title of the CCHA for the first time since 2006. Wingels was also recognized as the best defensive striker and nominated for the CCHA Second All-Star Team, after he had been appointed to the NCAA's Frozen Four All-Tournament Team in spring 2009.

After the end of the season, the center received on June 1, 2010 a contract offer from the San Jose Sharks for two years, which he signed. His achievements in the pre -season training camp impressed the coaches so much that he was in the Sharks squad at the start of the 2010/11 NHL season and made his debut in the National Hockey League . He was also mainly used for the San Joses farm team , the Worcester Sharks from the American Hockey League . In the 2011/12 season , the striker gained further experience in the NHL. In the shortened season 2012/13 , which he initially spent between September 2012 and January 2013 at the Finnish ice hockey club KooKoo Kouvola in the second-rate Mestis due to the lockout , Wingels made the final jump into the NHL squad San Joses. He was a permanent member of this until January 2017, before he was given to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Zack Stortini , Buddy Robinson and a seven-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft .

In the jersey of the Canadian capital city club, the striker fulfilled his expiring contract until the end of the season. He then joined the Chicago Blackhawks as a free agent in July 2017 . However, the Blackhawks gave it to the Boston Bruins as part of the trade deadline in February 2018 and in return received a five-round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft , which should become one for the fourth round if Boston makes the second round of the playoffs 2018 or if Wingels signs a new contract with the Bruins by summer 2018. The former was fulfilled, but the latter was not, so Wingels had been looking for a new employer since July 2018. He found this in Europe when he joined Genève-Servette HC from the Swiss National League in August 2018 .

International

Wingels represented his home country at the 2014 World Cup in the Belarusian capital Minsk . There he played seven tournament games for the US team, in which he remained pointless. At the end of the tournament, the team finished sixth.
