Daniel Spencer Winnik (born May 6, 1985 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Genève-Servette HC in the Swiss National League since October 2018 .
Career
Daniel Winnik began his career as a hockey player with the Wexford Raiders , for which he was active from 2001 to 2003 in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League . He then played for three years for the University of New Hampshire team . During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2004 in the ninth round as a total of 265th player by the Phoenix Coyotes . Towards the end of the 2005/06 season Winnik was the first time for Phoenix ' farm team from the American Hockey League , the San Antonio Rampage , on the ice. After Winnik was active exclusively for San Antonio in the following season, the center scored a total of 26 scorer points, including eleven goals, in 79 games in his rookie year in the 2007/08 NHL season . In the following season , however, his point yield fell drastically, as a result of which he was briefly sent back to the AHL farm team. With the Coyotes he reached the play-offs for the first time in the 2009/10 season , but they were eliminated in the first round against the Detroit Red Wings .
On June 28, 2010, the attacker was transferred to the Colorado Avalanche during the off-season in exchange for a four-round vote for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft . These gave him on February 27, 2012 together with TJ Galiardi and a seven-round vote in exchange for Jamie McGinn , Mike Connolly and Michael Sgarbossa to the San Jose Sharks . On July 20, 2012, he was signed as a free agent by the Anaheim Ducks for two years. For this he scored two goals in his first NHL appearance on January 19, 2013 in the away game at the Vancouver Canucks .
In the summer of 2014, Winnik left the Anaheim Ducks and joined the Toronto Maple Leafs . The Canadian stayed there for barely six months until he was handed over to the Pittsburgh Penguins in February 2015 . In return, the Maple Leafs received Zach Sill , a four-round vote for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, and a second-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . Winnik ended the season in Pittsburgh, but his contract was not renewed and he returned to the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent in July 2015.
In February 2016, however, Winnik was given a five-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2016 to the Washington Capitals , which in return sent Brooks Laich , Connor Carrick and a second-round vote for the same draft to Toronto. After the 2017/18 season, Winnik received no further contract in Washington and therefore joined the Minnesota Wild as a free agent in October 2017 . There he fulfilled a one-year contract that was not renewed in summer 2018. Winnik then moved to Europe for the first time by signing a one-year contract with Genève-Servette HC from the Swiss National League in October 2018 .
