Michael Sgarbossa (born July 25, 1992 in Campbellville , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player . Since July 2018 he has been under contract with the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League and plays at the same time for their farm team , the Hershey Bears , in the American Hockey League on the position of the center .

Career

Sgarbossa began his career with the Halton Hurricanes in the South-Central Triple A Hockey League. After the 2007/08 season he was selected by the Barrie Colts in the third round of the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 54th position . The player then decided to move to the OHL and was used in 67 games for the Colts in the 2008/09 season .

On November 9, 2009, he was transferred from the Barrie Colts to the Saginaw Spirit . On September 21, 2010 he signed a three-year entry contract with the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League (NHL). For Saginaw, the offensive player completed a total of 74 games before he was given up on December 9, 2010 after a swap to the Sudbury Wolves . In the 2010/11 OHL season , Sgarbossa was used in 37 games, scoring 29 goals and a total of 62 points . Sgarbossa was named OHL Player of the Month for March after scoring 10 goals and 17 assists in 13 games . Across the seasons, he scored a total of 82 points, making him the Wolves' most successful player this season.

The following season , his contract rights were transferred on February 27, 2012 from the Sharks to the Colorado Avalanche . Shortly thereafter, he was named OHL Player of the Month for February. That month, he scored 13 goals and 12 assists in 13 games. Sgarbossa finished the OHL season with 102 scorer points as the most successful points collector of the Ontario Hockey League and consequently received the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy . He was the first Sudbury Wolves OHL top scorer since Mike Foligno in the 1978/79 season . In addition, he was elected to the OHL First All-Star team and received the second most votes behind Michael Houser in the election for the best player in the league ( Red Tilson Trophy ) .

As a result, Michael Sgarbossa was sent by the Avalanche to their farm team Lake Erie Monsters in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he had his first appearances as a professional player with the beginning of the AHL season 2012/13 . Sgarbossa scored a total of 36 scorer points in the first 38 games of the 2012/13 AHL season and was honored with participation in the AHL All-Star Classic 2013. He was then appointed to the squad of the Colorado Avalanche and completed his first game in the National Hockey League (NHL) on January 30, 2013 against the Vancouver Canucks .

In March 2015, the Avalanche gave him to the Anaheim Ducks or their farm team at the time, Norfolk Admirals , and received Mat Clark in return . The striker then spent the following season with Anaheim's new AHL cooperation partner, the San Diego Gulls . It was only at the beginning of the 2016/17 season that he managed to establish himself in the Ducks squad before being given to the Florida Panthers in mid-November 2016 in exchange for Logan Shaw .

At the end of the 2016/17 season, the Panthers did not renew the attacker's contract, so he joined the Winnipeg Jets as a free agent in July 2017 . In July 2018, Sgarbossa also signed a one-year deal with Washington Capitals .

International

Michael Sgarbossa represented his home country with the Canadian national team for the first time at the 2010 U18 World Junior Championship . The center was used in all six of the Canadians' games, scoring a goal and an assist .
