The Ontario Hockey League ( OHL for short ) is one of the top three Canadian junior leagues that make up the Canadian Hockey League .

In addition to the Ontario Hockey League , the Canadian Hockey League includes the WHL and LHJMQ . Only players between the ages of 15 and 20 are allowed to play in the OHL. However, each team has the option to use three players who are already 20 years old at the start of the season. These are called "Overage" juniors. Most of the teams are from Ontario , Canada , but some are from Michigan or Pennsylvania as well .

The 2007 All-Star Game took place in Saginaw , Michigan. That was the first time that an OHL All-Star Game took place in the USA. The OHL emerged in 1980 seamlessly from the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League (OMJHL), which had existed since 1896 as OHA Junior Hockey.

Awards

The team with the highest points after the regular season receives the Hamilton Spectator Trophy . There is also a trophy for each group winner. These are the Leyden Trophy (East Division), the Emms Trophy (Central Division), the Holody Trophy (Midwest Division) and the Bumbacco Trophy (West Division).

The OHL master will then be determined in a playoff round. The team that is representing the Eastern Conference qualified for the finals, will receive the Bobby Orr Trophy , the representative of the Western Conference is the Wayne Gretzky Trophy awarded. The winner of the final series will receive the J. Ross Robertson Cup .

There are also various awards for the players after the season, such as the Red Tilson Trophy for the most valuable player in the league, the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy for the player with the highest points in the regular season or the Emms Family Award for the rookie of the year.

Trainers and general managers are awarded the Matt Leyden Trophy and OHL Executive of the Year .

Priority selection

The Priority Selection was organized for the first time before the 1974/75 season by the OMJHL. The Ontario Hockey League teams select players aged 16 and 17 from the province of Ontario and the US states of Michigan , Pennsylvania , New York and more. Due to exceptions, it is possible that 15-year-old "outstanding" players can be selected. This first happened in 2005 when John Tavares was admitted to the event. Other 15-year-olds selected so far were Aaron Ekblad in 2011 , Connor McDavid in 2012 and Sean Day in 2013 .

Until 2001, the Priority Selection was held in a public place. In 2001 the Ontario Hockey League decided to host the draft via the Internet to take the pressure and attention off the young players.

The first player selected will receive the Jack Ferguson Award .
