The Newmarket Royals were a Canadian ice hockey team from Newmarket , Ontario . The team played from 1992 to 1994 in one of the three highest Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

history

The Cornwall Royals were relocated from Cornwall , Ontario to Newmarket , Ontario in 1992 and renamed Newmarket Royals.

In their first season, the Royals reached fifth place in their division and qualified straight away for the playoffs, in which they were defeated by the Sudbury Wolves in the best-of-seven series in seven games. In the 1993/94 season, Newmarket was both division bottom and last in the entire Ontario Hockey League . With only nine wins and a total of 28 points in 66 games, the team was 18 points behind even the penultimate. In addition, the Newmarket Royals broke a negative record that still exists. As the only team in the entire Canadian Hockey League , they ended a season without a single away win.

After just two years, the franchise was sold to brothers Robert and Dino Ciccarelli in 1994 , who relocated it to their hometown of Sarnia , Ontario , where it has since been active in the OHL under the name Sarnia Sting .
