The Mississauga Steelhead are a Canadian ice hockey franchise from Mississauga in the province of Ontario . The team was formed in May 2012 from the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors and has been playing in one of the top three Canadian major junior ice hockey leagues, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) , since the 2012/13 season .

history

In May 2012, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors were sold by team owner Eugene Melnyk to the Mississauga entrepreneurs Elliott Kerr and David Livingston. Then more than 1,400 people voted for a new franchise name. After two weeks and over 110 different suggestions, the new nickname Steelheads was finally chosen on May 24, 2012 . The name is based on the so-called steelhead trout , which is also found in the local Credit River . The fish also graces the team's first logo, which was released a week later.

The Steelheads started playing in the Ontario Hockey League season 2012/13 and reached in their first season with an eighth place in the OHL Eastern Conference, qualifying for the play-offs , where they played the Belleville Bulls in the first round documents.
