history

The Hershey Center, home of the majors

The Toronto St. Michael's Majors were relocated to Mississauga , Ontario in 2007, where they have since played as Mississauga St. Michael's Majors in the Ontario Hockey League. Previously, Eugene Melnyk, owner of the Ottawa Senators and founder of Biovail, had acquired the rights to the franchise from St. Michael's College and sold the Mississauga IceDogs , which he bought on July 12, 2006, to Bill Burke, who had them after the 2006 season / 07 to St. Catharines , Ontario, where they have been active as Niagara IceDogs in the OHL ever since .

In their debut season , the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors were third in their division and were eliminated in the Conferences quarterfinals with a sweep in the best-of-seven series against the Niagara IceDogs. In the 2008/09 season they were second in the Central Division and beat in the playoffs first in the Conference quarter-finals, the Barrie Colts with 4-1 wins, before they failed in the Conference semifinals with 2-4 wins at the Brampton Battalion . An average of 1,953 spectators attended the games of the majors in the OHL with a capacity of 5,400 visitors. This gave Mississauga the second worst average attendance in the entire Canadian Hockey League .

In the 2010/11 season , the majors reached the final series of the J. Ross Robertson Cup for the first time and were only subject to the Owen Sound Attack in the decisive seventh match . As a host, the team was qualified for the Memorial Cup 2011 and again made it into the final, in which the team lost to the Saint John Sea Dogs .

In May 2012 the team was sold by owner Eugene Melnyk to the Mississauga entrepreneurs Elliott Kerr and David Livingston and renamed Mississauga Steelheads .
