Mississauga [ ˌmɪsɪˈsɑgə ] is a Canadian city west of Toronto in the province of Ontario with about 713,443 inhabitants on an area of 288.42 km². It is the sixth largest city in Canada in terms of population .
history
The city's name is derived from the Mississauga Indians (a subgroup of the Anishinabe ), from whom the land was bought in the early 19th century.
It was settled in 1805 and received city rights in 1974 .
Most of Mississauga's historic buildings are in Streetsville, known as the "Village in the City". It is named after Timothy Street who received this area from the British government in 1824 for his services.
On November 10, 1979 in Mississauga at the junction of Mavis Road / Dundas Street, a freight train with 106 carloads of explosive toxins on the Canadian Pacific Railway derailed . 200,000 residents were then evacuated, so that the city looked like a ghost town for nine days. After Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005, this was the world's largest evacuation in peacetime (see also Mississauga rail accident ).
Economy and Infrastructure
Main employer is located in that administrative district major airport Toronto Pearson International Airport and the companies located there. Due to its relative proximity to Toronto, many large companies have their corporate headquarters or their Canadian headquarters in Mississauga, such as the aerospace companies Magellan Aerospace and Microsat Systems . Many companies in the pharmaceutical, banking and financial services sectors, as well as electronics and IT, are based in Mississauga. The Citibank Canada operates two IT centers in Mississauga. In addition, TD Bank Financial , which operates three IT development centers in Mississauga together with the Royal Bank of Canada . Microsoft Canada, Hewlett Packard (HP) operate a subsidiary in the city.
There are several shopping opportunities in Mississauga and downtown. A large shopping center, the Square One Shopping Center with over 360 shops, restaurants and cafes is centrally located in the city.

Mississauga is served primarily by the Toronto media, including several radio and television broadcasters. The Mississauga News , a regional newspaper, is published three times a week and online daily. Another newspaper is the Sunday Times , a newspaper for the South Asian community that is published weekly and also online.
FM 91.9 (CFRE-FM) is a campus radio station broadcasting from the local campus of the University of Toronto at low power.

Colleges
The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM / Erindale College) operate a campus in Mississauga with around 10,000 students enrolled. This is one of the three campus facilities at the university. Since 2002 the number of students has risen constantly by 1000 students annually.
Sheridan College is building a $ 46 million college campus due to open in fall 2011. The site will have an area of around 34,000 m 2 and will offer bachelor's degrees in various fields. The campus is located north of the Living Arts Center. Initially, around 1,700 students will be enrolled at the location. Once the rest of the buildings and campus facilities have been completed, capacities for 5,000 students will be available.

Mississauga's schools are under the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Together they operate around 150 schools, including elementary and secondary schools up to grade 12 (high school).
Sports
Mississauga is the home of the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors ice hockey team , which has played in the Ontario Hockey League since 2007 . Mississauga was previously the home of the Mississauga IceDogs between 1999 and 2007 before they moved to St. Catharines and transformed into Niagara IceDogs . The Hershey Center is the largest sports and events center, which opened in 1999. The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors still train in this hall today. Other hockey teams include the Mississauga Chiefs , who play in the Canadian Women's Hockey League.

Urban public transport is operated by MiWay (Mississauga Transit). MiWay offers multiple connections within the city as well as connections to major major interchange options. MiWay offers connections to the Toronto subway and rapid transit system from Mississauga . Furthermore to other transport associations such as GO Transit , Oakville Transit , Brampton Transit and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC).
Highways
The Highway 401 (Macdonald - Cartier Freeway) connects Windsor with Québec and passes through Mississaugas northern district. The eastern part of the city is connected to the collector / espress way and serves as a feeder to Highway 403. The Queen Elizabeth Way runs through the southern half of the city. Highway 403 continues north and joins Highway 410, which leads to Brampton . Parts of Highway 409 start in the city and connect it to Toronto Pearson Airport.
Flight connections
The Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is located northeast in Mississauga and is an important international hub. In addition to Air Canada and Westjet Airlines , many different airlines fly to this airport. The airport offers several regional, national and international flight destinations. It is the largest airport in Canada with more than 30 million passengers annually.
Train connections
Mississauga is centrally located, which means there are three major train connections. These are served by the Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway and Metrolinx . VIA Rail Canada also operates a connection between Québec and Windsor . The nearest train stations are in Brampton , Oakville and Toronto .
