GO Transit is the name of the southern Ontario public transportation system based in Toronto . The GO Transit network opens up the metropolitan area of the Greater Toronto Area and the Greater Hamilton Area as well as some communities beyond, primarily through a rapid transit network . In addition to trains, GO Transit also operates regional buses . Since 2009 it has been a division of Metrolinx .

description

While the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is responsible for inner-city traffic in Toronto, GO Transit only offers connections in the metropolitan area.

GO transit rail network

The company transports around 55 million passengers annually. On average, 215,000 passengers per week are transported on a working day, 83% of them by train and 17% by bus. Due to the star-shaped route network, 96% of all train journeys end or begin in Union Station , while around 70% of all bus journeys travel through the city of Toronto.

GO Transit serves the greater Toronto and Hamilton areas . In addition to Toronto and Hamilton, these include the cities of Halton , Peel , York and Durham . A GO-Transit regional administration is responsible for each of these cities and their regional communities. It also serves Simcoe , Dufferin , and Wellington Counties beyond the metropolitan area . The company thus reaches more than seven million inhabitants on an area of 8,000 square kilometers, which corresponds to a radius of more than 100 km around downtown Toronto. The network connections of GO Transit are connected to the most important nodes of the TTC . Similar to the TTC, GO Transit also has its own security personnel who patrol along the company's facilities and their transport links.

Rapid transit network

Diesel locomotive-driven double-decker trains are mostly used on the 390 km long network. The total of 40 trains serve 59 stops on seven lines. The rolling stock includes 53 diesel-electric locomotives from Electro-Motive Diesel (F59PH II, III and IV) and, since 2007, from MPI ( MP40PH-3C ). Most of the 470 double-deck cars introduced since 1978 come from Bombardier Transportation ( Bombardier BiLevel double-deck cars ).

Investigations are currently underway to determine whether the electrification of part of the route network makes economic and ecological sense.

In 2016, 125 Bombardier BiLevel double-decker cars valued at 428 million Canadian dollars were ordered for delivery by 2020.

Bus network

The stations of the 2,512 km long network are served by 384 regional buses (partly double-decker buses ). They come from various bus manufacturers in English-speaking countries, such as Motor Coach Industries , Prevost Car , Orion International and Alexander Dennis .

Tickets

GO Transit uses the Presto Card as an electronic ticket, which is accepted by numerous other public transport operators in Ontario.
