The Regional Municipality of Peel is a Regional Municipality ( regional municipality ) in the southwest of the Canadian province of Ontario , immediately west of Toronto . The main town and seat of the regional council is Brampton . The population is 1,296,814 (2011), the area 1246.89 km², which corresponds to a population density of 1040.0 inhabitants per km².

Peel is part of the Greater Toronto Area metropolitan area and the Golden Horseshoe metropolitan area, and is the second most populous municipality in the province after neighboring Toronto. The regional parish is named after the British Prime Minister Robert Peel and was formed in 1973 from parts of the former Peel County .
