The Thunder Bay District is an administrative district in the center of the Canadian province of Ontario . The main town is Thunder Bay . The population is 146,057 (2011), the area 103,719.51 km², which corresponds to a population density of 1.4 inhabitants per km². The district is located on the north shore of Lake Superior and emerged in 1871 from the western part of the Algoma District . As a result, individual areas were separated and newly created districts were assigned: Rainy River District 1885, Kenora District 1907 and Cochrane District 1921. The largest inland lake in Ontario, Lake Nipigon, is located in the area of the district .
