Manitouwadge is a small city in the Canadian province of Ontario .
The city has 2,300 inhabitants. It suffers badly from an emigrating population, which is no longer able to find work due to the mine closings in the region. The city was built up in the 1950s as a classic miners town, as gold , copper and zinc were found in the region and the mining of the raw materials began.
Manitouwadge is surrounded by unspoiled wilderness. The next town with about 5,000 inhabitants is Marathon , which is located directly on Lake Superior . "Manitouwadge" is an Indian word and means something like "cave of the great spirit".
