The Regional Municipality of Durham , also known as the Durham Region , is a Regional Municipality (regional municipality ) in the southwest of the Canadian province of Ontario . The main town and seat of the regional council is Whitby . The population is 608,124 (2011), the area 2523.62 km², which corresponds to a population density of 241.0 inhabitants per km².
Durham is part of the Greater Toronto Area metropolitan area and the Golden Horseshoe metropolitan area . The regional church is located just east of Toronto . It was formed in 1974 from parts of the former counties of Ontario and Northumberland and Durham .
