Pickering is a city on Lake Ontario in the province of Ontario , Canada , about 31 km northeast of Toronto , with about 100,000 inhabitants (as of 2009). It is located in the Golden Horseshoe , the central industrial region of Canada.
Pickering is part of the Toronto area and Durham regional parish . Pickering is bordered by Toronto to the west and the city of Ajax to the east .
Parts of the Rouge National Urban Park lie in the western part of the city .
economy
Pickering is the location of the Pickering nuclear power plant , which with eight reactors has a capacity of 4,124 megawatts. The nuclear power plant went into operation in 1971 and is operated as the largest local employer by Ontario Power Generation . In 2001 a wind farm for power generation was put into operation in the immediate vicinity of the nuclear power plant.
Many manufacturing companies are located in Pickering. A large company is Yorkville Sound , which develops audio equipment in Pickering and has it produced in the factory. The headquarters of Purdue Pharma Canada , a US pharmaceutical company located in the city. Another larger company is Hubbell Canada, which manufactures electrical components. The Lenbrook Group, headquartered in Pickering, is a large audio and hi-fi manufacturer and develops and sells its products worldwide under the brands NAD Electronics and PSB Speakers. A large water treatment company, Eco-Tec Inc., has its headquarters in Pickering.
Other important economic sectors are tourism and the service industry.

Local public transport has been operated by Pickering Transit since 2001. Pickering Transit merged with Ajax Transit and has since acted as the Ajax Pickering Transit Authority.
The busy and important Ontario Highway 401 runs right through the town.

Pickering is very popular as a location for various films and series. In the past few years the following films and series have been shot in Pickering:
- 1957 the CBC and American western show Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans .
- In 1994 the comedy The Ref with Denis Leary and Kevin Spacey was filmed at Pickering Harbor.
- In 1995 the family / adventure film Salt Water Moose with Timothy Dalton and Lolita Davidovitch was shot in the harbor area.
- In 1998 the comedy / action film The Big Hit with Mark Wahlberg , Lou Diamond Phillips , Avery Brooks , Christina Applegate was shot there.
- In 2001 the Canadian series Paradise Falls was filmed in the city.
- In 2008, the comedy / family soap Jimmy was filmed in Pickering near Dunbarton High School.
The Pickering Museum Village has been used as a revolving frame for several films: The Town Girl , Little Men , Anne on Green Gables, and Lantern Hill .
