Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is a publicly traded power company wholly owned by the Ontario provincial government. It generates approximately 70% of the electricity generated in the Province of Ontario, Canada. Sources of electricity generation are nuclear power , hydropower , solar energy , wind energy and fossil fuels . Although the Ontario power market has opened, the provincial government, as the sole shareholder, regulates the price and keeps it below average in order to keep market prices for power stable. However, since April 1, 2008, prices have been regulated by the Ontario Energy Board. The company produces 19,000 megawatts , making it one of the largest energy suppliers in North America .

history

The company was founded in April 1999 under the then Conservative provincial government under the leadership of Mike Harris. The aim was to deregulate the energy market in the province. The then plans saw the privatization of the assets of the predecessor company Ontario Hydro . Ontario Power Generation became the owner and operator of all Ontario Hydro power plants.

Power plants

The company operates two nuclear power plants, three fossil fuel power plants, 65 hydropower plants as well as two wind power plants and solar systems.
