The Darlington Nuclear Power Plant in Clarington, Ontario with four CANDU reactors has a gross output of 3740 MW .
The nuclear power plant was built in several construction phases between 1981 and 1993 by the Canadian state company Ontario Hydro. After the company was split up in April 1999, the newly founded company Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is now continuing to operate the power plant.
Many Ontario residents remember the Darlington Nuclear Power Plant for its massive cost overrun. The initial estimated cost of 2.5 billion CAD increased to completion 14.4 billion CAD. The discussion about responsibility for costs flares up again and again, especially in election years.
There has been speculation that two additional reactors of the CANDU-6 type, each with a capacity of 700 MW, will be built on the site of the power plant. In October 2013, the new building was canceled due to existing excess performance.
