After an apprenticeship with Hermann Isenmann , Lohaus studied from 1963 to 1966 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Joseph Beuys . Together with Panamarenko , Hugo Heyman and Wout Vercammen, he published the magazine Happening New from 1964 to 1965 . During a stay in Spain he met the art historian Anny de Decker. They married in 1966 and moved to Antwerp , where they set up the avant-garde gallery Wide White Space in their house, where Marcel Broodthaers exhibited in 1966 and Joseph Beuys in 1967; the latter led there in 1968 and the action Eurasienstab together with the Danish artist and Fluxus -Komponisten Henning Christiansen by. The gallery existed until 1976.

Bernd Lohaus mainly worked with wood, stone and paper. The sculptural works mostly consist of ensembles and individual pieces made of heavy beams, boards, blocks and cubes made of azobe, the hardest wood from West Africa. The relationship between the objects and the space was often important. Lohaus included the language as a component in many of his works. The artistic intervention is reduced to simple, sensitive actions. Bernd Lohaus' works were created against the background of Fluxus, Social Sculpture, Arte Povera, Minimal Art and Material Art and form a very unique position within them.
