SMAK

The Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (official abbreviation SMAK ) is a Belgian museum for contemporary art in Ghent . Opened in 1999, the museum is housed in a casino in Citadelpark that was rebuilt in 1949 and converted into a museum. The artistic director is Philippe van Cauteren.

history

The origin of the museum lies in the Ghent art association, Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, founded by Karel Geirlandt in 1957 . The founding purpose of the association was to support the Ghent art museum Museum voor Schone Kunsten in the sense of a circle of friends in order to be able to show contemporary art through acquisitions and direct support in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten. In 1975 this finally led to the establishment of the Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst Gent , which, however, had no rooms of its own. The Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst showed works from the Vereniging collection and smaller temporary exhibitions in the rooms of the Museum voor Schone Kunsten . Jan Hoet was the founding director of the Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst and managed the museum until it was transferred to the SMAK, which opened in 1999

In 1999 the SMAK got its own building in Citadelpark , directly opposite the Museum voor Schone Kunsten . Jan Hoet managed the house until 2003 and was then replaced by the American Peter Doroshenko, who only held this position for one year.
