Luc Tuymans (* 1958 in Mortsel , Belgium ) is a Belgian painter . He lives and works in Antwerp .

biography

Tuymans spent his childhood in Antwerp. He is the child of a Dutch woman whose family was active in the resistance against National Socialism ; the father's family, however, was connected to the National Socialists. The resulting controversy influenced Tuymans as well as his memories of a school days that were marked by abuse and violence on the part of his classmates.

From 1976 to 1982 Tuymans first studied fine art , then devoted himself to studying art history until 1986 . In the mid-1980s, the first fundamental works by Tuymans also fall, which, contrary to the artistic trends of the time, were figurative and reveal a remarkable visual language and aesthetics: Tuymans thematized historical and political events in subdued colors and questioned the credibility of images and visual media in terms of our historical memory.

In 1992, Luc Tuymans became known to an international audience through his appearance at documenta IX in Kassel and has since exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe, America and Asia. With the presentation of his works in the Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2001 and with his renewed participation in Documenta11 the following year, Tuymans finally established himself as one of the most sought-after and formative painters of his generation. Since then, his work has increasingly been shown in retrospective exhibitions, including the Tuymans presentations at K21 in Düsseldorf and Tate Modern in London, as well as in the Műcsarnok Kunsthalle in Budapest, in the Haus der Kunst in Munich and in the National Art Gallery Zachęta in Warsaw can be expected.

Tuymans' work was shown in an extensive overview exhibition in America, which was held until 2011 by the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toured Chicago. He has been an honorary external member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 2013 . In May 2018 Tuymans was elected as a new member in the Fine Arts section of the Berlin Academy of the Arts .

The singular visual language and aesthetics of Tuymans, as well as the adherence to figurative image content, contributed significantly to the discourse on new forms of painting that began in the late 1990s. With the restrained colors and the directness of his picture content, he influenced a whole generation of younger painters, including Wilhelm Sasnal and Eberhard Havekost in particular . The FAZ art critic Rose-Maria Gropp thinks that one can understand him as a “contemporary master of vanitas” idea of ​​the Baroque.
