The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves , also: Museum Serralves, is a museum for contemporary art in the Portuguese city of Porto . It is part of the Fundação de Serralves art foundation and is publicly owned.

The museum

The museum is located in the Parque de Serralves , an 18.43  hectare park designed in 1932 by the French landscape architect Jacques Gréber on the site of an agricultural homestead. The Serralves Gardens are considered to be one of the first examples of artistic garden design in Portugal in the first half of the 20th century.

The design of the museum building was based on plans by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, who teaches at the University of Porto . The art foundation laid down the conception of the museum and its integration into the park landscape in 1989. Construction began in 1996, and the museum opened on June 6, 1999 with the Circa 1968 exhibition.

The museum is the most important museum for contemporary art in Portugal and uses its entire exhibition space with special exhibitions, and its own collection is only shown as part of thematic exhibitions. In addition to the fine arts, the concept also includes other fields such as music, film, performance, dance and architecture. An important focus is also on art education, which is promoted through numerous public events and publications.

The museum includes the Casa de Serralves , a villa built between 1925 and 1944 by the Portuguese architect José Marques da Silva in the Art Deco style. The building is considered an outstanding example of streamlined modern architecture in Portugal. Originally the villa served as a private residence, today it is the seat of the Art Foundation Fundação de Serralves. It is also used for special exhibitions.
