Almeida often combined painting and sculpture in her work, for example by adding three-dimensional elements such as horse hair. Traditional components of painting such as canvas, stretcher frames and colors become the central content of the picture. Almeida's visual compositions for space and line are characterized by a high degree of complexity. A recurring concern of her artistic work was the examination of the relationship between artist and image, for example by thematizing her own presence as an artist when painting over photographs with the primary colors red and blue or by depicting her own body, which is deliberately not staged as a self-portrait in choreographed poses.
