José Marques da Silva

José Marques da Silva (born October 18, 1869 in Porto , Portugal ; † June 6, 1947 there ) was a Portuguese architect . Marques da Silva designed several formative buildings in Porto.

First, José Marques da Silva, the son of a marbleist, completed his architecture studies at the Portuguese Academy of Fine Arts. He deepened his studies again between 1889 and 1896 in Paris .

After returning to Portugal, he soon became known for his designs, and received several awards at the World Exhibition in Paris (1900) and Rio de Janeiro (1908). From 1900 he was responsible for many well-known buildings in the northern Portuguese city of Porto, particularly well-known among them the São Bento train station (1900-1916) and the Teatro Nacional S. João (1909).

In 1907 he completed his habilitation at the Portuguese Academy of Fine Arts, and between 1913 and 1939 he headed the university. He received various honors, including the Lisbon and Portuens Academy of Fine Arts and membership in the Order of Santiago .
