Santuário da Penha

The Santuário da Penha (also Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Penha ) is a Catholic pilgrimage church on Monte da Penha above the northern Portuguese city of Guimarães .

history

The plans for the construction come from the Portuguese architect José Marques da Silva . Work began on August 6, 1930. Marques da Silva broke with the traditional forms of church building in Portugal and based the design on the Art Deco of the 1930s. Almost exclusively the granite found on site was used for the construction .

During the construction work, a fire broke out on February 4, 1939, in which an image of the Virgin Mary and a carving that crowned the main altar were destroyed. The completion of the church was delayed as a result.

The church was consecrated on September 14, 1947, without the architect, who had died three months earlier.
