Neil Jenney (* 1945 in Torrington , Connecticut , USA ; lives in New York City ) is an American contemporary painter and representative of New Realism in painting, known for his bad paintings .

life and work

Neil Jenney is largely a self-taught artist . He attended Massachusetts College of Art in 1964. In 1966, he moved to New York City, where he has lived and worked ever since.

The style of his painting was referred to as bad painting by art critic Marcia Tucker in 1978 , a description Jenney accepts as aptly.

Jenney describes his style as realistic, but in an idiosyncratic use of the word, which means: a style in which narratives find truth in a simple relationship of objects. His pictures tell little angry or funny stories. Stories that play out in the mind of the viewer when he sees them and that relate the people or objects depicted to one another.

The beginning of his painting in 1969/1967 is the period in which minimalism and photorealism emerged , to which he responded with his style. Neil Jenney has always been against photorealism in painting. Neil Jenney's work during this period was very influential: New York Times art critic Roberta Smith wrote " In those two years Jenney helped representational painting on a new course and set precedents for the art of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. "

In 1972 he took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Realism department with four of his pictures .

His works belong to the collections of major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art , New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art , New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art , New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art , Washington, DC , des Los Angeles County Museum of Art , Los Angeles and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles .
