Roberta Smith (* 1947 in New York City ) is an American art critic .

Career

Roberta Smith was born in New York City and grew up in Lawrence, Kansas . She received her bachelor's degree from Grinnell College . In the late 1960s she made first contacts with artists, in 1968 she worked at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Smith moved to New York and in 1971 accepted a position as a secretary at the Museum of Modern Art . She was a participant in the Whitney Museum's free study program . There she met Donald Judd .

From 1972 she worked for the Paula Cooper Gallery and later began writing reviews for Artforum , the New York Times , Art in America and The Village Voice (1981–1985). She attracted attention with texts on Philip Guston 's late paintings, the sculptures by Richard Artschwager and the performances by Scott Burton . Smith has been an art critic for the New York Times since 1986. She has written numerous essays for exhibition catalogs and monographs by contemporary artists such as Donald Judd, Alex Katz , Elizabeth Murray and Cy Twombly .

Roberta Smith lives in New York City and has been married to art critic Jerry Saltz since 1992 . She has lectured and taught at the School of Visual Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design .
