Art critics describe, evaluate and classify contemporary works of the visual arts according to historical, aesthetic-formal and generic criteria . As a profession, art critics first appeared in France in the 17th century. Her art reviews were and are mainly published in the feature sections of periodicals (daily and weekly newspapers), in specialist journals and books as monographs .

Career

There is no specific university degree in art criticism . Art critics are therefore self-taught , but they have often completed a degree in art and / or have knowledge and experience from related training paths and / or their own practice in the field of fine arts.

Work areas

According to the International Art Critics Association ( AICA ), art critics can be defined as those who work in the following four fields:

  • Press periodicals, radio broadcasts, television or video , electronic media ;
  • Publication of works on art history, aesthetics or criticism;
  • Teaching activity in art criticism, art history, aesthetics, in the curatorial being or in art at a higher to the highest level;
  • Curatorial activity and research with the aim of education or science, including scientific or critical texts for museums or galleries whose main aim is not of a commercial nature.

The job title is not protected in Germany - anyone can call themselves an art critic and work as such.
