Harold Rosenberg

Harold Rosenberg (born February 2, 1906 in New York , † July 11, 1978 there ) was an American art and culture critic .

In 1952 he coined the term Action Painting , an art movement that later became known as Abstract Expressionism .

In the 1960s and 1970s he and Clement Greenberg dominated the American art scene and recognized and set trends far beyond art in the narrower sense. In 1975 Rosenberg was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
