Coosje van Bruggen
Coosje van Bruggen (born June 6, 1942 in Groningen , † January 10, 2009 in Los Angeles ) was an American sculptor , art historian and art critic of Dutch origin. She was the artistic partner and wife of the sculptor Claes Oldenburg .
life and work
After studying art history at the University of Groningen , van Bruggen worked at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam from 1967 to 1971 . From 1971 to 1976 she had a teaching position at the Academy for Art and Industry Enschede . She worked with Claes Oldenburg since 1976, and the couple married in 1977. In 1978 van Bruggen moved to New York, and in 1993 she became a US citizen.
Together with Oldenburg, the artist designed several large sculptures, including the Inverted Collar and Tie in Frankfurt . Van Bruggen has worked as an independent curator and art critic since the early 1980s, and in 1982 she was a member of the selection committee of documenta 7 . Van Bruggen published works on the early works of Oldenburg, on the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the works of Bruce Nauman . Van Bruggen's sculptures are assigned to the Pop Art style .
Coosje van Bruggen died of breast cancer in Los Angeles in early January 2009 .
